Lawson Exonerated in Mexico City GP Incident

In response to allegations of misconduct during the Mexico City Grand Prix, the FIA has defended Liam Lawson, asserting that he adhered to safety protocols despite criticism from the Mexican automobile federation, OMDAI. The incident in question arose as Lawson maneuvered through Turn 1 while track marshals were present on the circuit.

The OMDAI report outlined that Lawson re-entered the track amidst “double yellow flags,” which indicate danger. It noted that his team had communicated the presence of debris and instructed him to exercise extreme caution. However, the investigation revealed significant mitigation of speed on Lawson’s part, contradicting OMDAI’s assertion that he may not have complied with safety regulations.

“Upon analyzing onboard footage, it is clear that Lawson maintained his steering line while encountering the marshals,” OMDAI stated, suggesting that he failed to adjust his trajectory accordingly. This assessment led to immediate backlash from the FIA, which emphasized, “Telemetry confirms that Lawson appropriately slowed down, braking earlier than in previous laps.”

The FIA acknowledged the concerning nature of the scenario but clarified that Lawson is not at fault. “It is fortunate this incident did not lead to serious consequences,” an FIA spokesperson remarked. “We are collaborating with OMDAI and Racing Bulls to improve safety procedures.”

While the investigation continues, the FIA has affirmed its commitment to thorough analysis, taking into account all relevant evidence, including radio communications. The findings will be shared publicly upon completion.

The statement concluded by expressing gratitude to the volunteers and marshals for their crucial role in ensuring the safety of motorsport.
