Colton Herta’s Future in Formula 1: Cadillac’s Dilemma
Cadillac’s entry into Formula 1 is set to be complicated by the potential rise of Colton Herta, who aims to secure a Super License through a promising Formula 2 campaign next year. Team principal Graeme Lowdon acknowledged that Herta’s performance could influence driver selection for the 2027 season.
Cadillac has already secured veteran drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas for its inaugural 2026 season. Herta, transitioning from IndyCar, is working diligently to accumulate the necessary Super License points, making him a viable candidate for a seat should he succeed.
“Every team wants to have tough decisions. I really respect Colton’s approach,” Lowdon stated, highlighting the competitive nature of Formula 2. He added, “We want him to be successful and we want him to learn all this stuff.”
While Lowdon expressed enthusiasm for nurturing talent within Cadillac’s ranks, he clarified, “There’s no automatic arrangement; we select drivers on merit.” He reinforced that performance in Formula 2 will play a critical role in driver evaluations.
Additionally, Cadillac recently conducted a testing session at Imola with Perez, using a 2023 Ferrari. While opportunities for Herta in testing remain uncertain, Lowdon confirmed that plans for FP1 outings are in place. “Colton is a prime candidate for that,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of development for rookie drivers.
Lowdon also acknowledged the challenges new teams face under current regulations, particularly regarding testing limitations. However, he praised Ferrari’s support, indicating a collaborative relationship that can enhance Cadillac’s progress.
As Herta gears up for the Formula 2 season, all eyes will be on his performance as Cadillac navigates its strategic decisions in the evolving landscape of Formula 1.
