Red Bull Motorsport Advisor Helmut Marko to Depart
In a significant shake-up within Red Bull Racing, Dr. Helmut Marko has announced his decision to leave his role as motorsport advisor at the end of the 2023 season, concluding over two decades of impactful service.
The 82-year-old Austrian has been instrumental in shaping the team’s driver development program, particularly since Red Bull entered Formula 1 in 2005. Marko’s keen ability to spot and nurture talent has led to the rise of numerous drivers, notably four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and current star Max Verstappen.
Marko’s tenure has not been without controversy, having faced criticism for remarks made regarding Sergio Perez’s ethnicity and his comments following rookie Isack Hadjar’s debut race crash. Recent events also saw a statement from Red Bull condemning online abuse directed at Kimi Antonelli after Marko incorrectly suggested the rookie had facilitated Lando Norris’s overtaking during the Qatar Grand Prix.
The decision to resign comes amid recent leadership changes within the team, including the appointment of Laurent Mekies as team principal in July, following a prolonged power struggle with former principal Christian Horner. Marko acknowledged the desire to conclude a “very long, intense, and successful chapter” in his life, expressing pride in the achievements made with Red Bull.
“I wish the entire team continued success and am convinced that they will be fighting for both world championship titles again next year,” Marko stated.
Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff expressed regret over Marko’s decision, emphasizing his critical role in the team’s ascent to multiple championship titles and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
“Helmut has earned incomparable merits for our team… His instinct for exceptional talent not only shaped our junior program but also left a lasting impact on Formula 1 as a whole,” Mintzlaff remarked.
Marko’s departure marks the end of an era for Red Bull Racing, as the team prepares for a future without one of its most influential figures.
