Imola Grand Prix Qualifying Report: Crashes Disrupt Q1
Qualifying for the 2025 Formula 1 Imola Grand Prix faced significant interruptions today, marked by two major crashes that red-flagged the session twice.
Alpine driver Franco Colapinto crashed during his final attempt in Q1, spinning into the gravel at the exit of Tamburello and making contact with the barriers. Though Colapinto managed to signal he was uninjured before exiting the car, the incident underscored the risks at the iconic circuit.
In a separate incident, Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull experienced a violent crash at the Villeneuve Chicane, rolling his car before landing on its wheels. Fortunately, Tsunoda emerged from the wreckage without injury.
Colapinto, who secured the 14th spot for Q2, is expected to face a grid penalty due to a procedural mishap of being released early into the pit lane, reminiscent of a recent incident involving Mercedes drivers. As a consequence of the red flag, Liam Lawson was unable to complete his final lap, finishing Q1 in 16th place. He was joined on the sidelines by Nico Hülkenberg, Esteban Ocon, and Oliver Bearman. Bearman believed he had completed a valid lap before the red flag but was ultimately notified that his time would not be reinstated.
Colapinto, replacing Jack Doohan for this race, is making his season debut with Alpine after a 2024 tenure with Williams. The session was further delayed as repairs were made to the tyre barriers at Tamburello, highlighting the challenges teams face at Imola.
As the weekend progresses, all eyes will remain on how the remaining qualifiers adapt to these robust racing conditions and the potential ramifications for the upcoming race.
