Verstappen Apologizes After Controversial Incident at Spanish Grand Prix

Barcelona, Spain – Max Verstappen has admitted fault following a collision with George Russell during the closing laps of the Spanish Grand Prix, where he received a ten-second time penalty and accrued three penalty points. The incident occurred at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya when Verstappen, running third, collided with Russell after a debatable maneuver.

The final laps saw Verstappen pitted for hard tires, the only fresh compound available for Red Bull at the time. After a late safety car, he lost position to Charles Leclerc at the restart. When Russell attempted to overtake him at Turn 1, Verstappen initially defended his position but was instructed by race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to yield. Despite his claims of resistance, Verstappen collided with Russell moments later.

In a post-race debrief, Verstappen reportedly expressed regret for the incident. He stated the collision “should not have happened,” although he refrained from a formal apology on social media.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner reflected on the race strategy, noting their decision to execute a three-stop strategy was impacted adversely by the timing of the safety car. He labeled the outcome "frustrating," emphasizing that they had aimed for a strong finish and highlighted the incident as part of the unpredictable nature of racing.

Horner affirmed, "Max apologized in the debrief for his incident with Russell. We leave Barcelona frustrated that we didn’t take more from the race, but that’s racing. It can turn in a split second."

The team is now focusing on setup improvements ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, aiming to rebound from the disappointment of the weekend.
