McLaren’s Norris and Piastri Sidestep Questions on Verstappen’s Penalty at Spanish GP

In the aftermath of the Spanish Grand Prix, McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri skillfully navigated inquiries regarding Max Verstappen’s contentious 10-second penalty, which stemmed from a collision with Mercedes’ George Russell.

Norris, who finished the race strongly, laid claim to the spotlight by joking with Russell about the incident. "I can’t believe you turned on him like that. That was crazy," he quipped during his post-race interview with Sky Sports F1, referencing the incident that dominated discussions. He reiterated, “My race was very good today, and the team had a great one-two,” highlighting his satisfaction with the team’s performance but refraining from probing deeper into Verstappen’s actions.

Piastri, for his part, expressed uncertainty about the context of the incident. "I thought he was giving the position back… so I don’t really get what happened there," he stated, emphasizing his need for further clarification on the situation.

As the post-race press conference progressed, both McLaren drivers continued to deflect questions regarding the penalty. "Oscar told me he had some interesting opinions on it, so I’m going to pass straight over to him," Norris stated with a smile. Piastri’s assessment was cautious, noting, "It obviously didn’t look great."

When pressed, Norris adopted a more serious demeanor, stating, "I don’t know what happened… so I don’t think it’s something for me to comment on for now."

As discussions swirl around the fairness of Verstappen’s penalty, particularly in light of comments by former champion Nico Rosberg, the spotlight remains on McLaren, who celebrated a successful race with their drivers finishing strongly while maintaining their focus away from controversy.
