Norris Triumphs in Miami Sprint Amid Controversy
Lando Norris secured a pivotal victory in the Miami Grand Prix Sprint, benefiting from a late safety car while Oscar Piastri lamented his misfortune.
Piastri, who claimed pole position at the start, took an early lead on the first lap from Kimi Antonelli, who struggled in wet conditions and lost three positions. As the race progressed and the track dried, the McLaren duo maintained close quarters. However, Piastri was the first to pit from the lead, while Norris awaited his turn, ultimately losing time until Fernando Alonso’s crash prompted a safety car. This allowed Norris to regain the lead and seal the victory.
“My luck in Miami seems pretty good at the minute, so I’m happy,” Norris remarked. He acknowledged the strategic complexity of the race, highlighting his ability to capitalize on the safety car. “It’s always just difficult… If you box early, it paid off for Lewis [Hamilton]. Or do you stay out later and maybe get the safety car?"
Norris will take home eight points for his Sprint win but remains optimistic for the main qualifying event. “That’s the plan, but it’s tricky. There’s a lot of quick guys out there,” he stated.
Conversely, Piastri expressed disappointment but maintained a constructive outlook. "I feel like I did pretty much everything right there… Racing is a pretty cruel business," he said on team radio, reflecting on his performance and hoping for better luck in the upcoming races. "We had a little bit of pace on the table in Sprint qualifying… We’ll try to make it even quicker."
This Sprint race sets the stage for a competitive qualifying session later today, with both McLaren drivers looking to capitalize on their momentum.
