McLaren Parts Ways with Alex Dunne Amid Contract Disputes

McLaren Racing has officially terminated its contract with young Irish driver Alex Dunne, effective immediately. The decision follows unsuccessful negotiations regarding Dunne’s future within the team after a promising start to his career.

Dunne, a product of McLaren’s Formula 1 driver development program, made a notable impression during his FP1 debut in Austria earlier this year. As a rookie in Formula 2, he clinched victories in two of his first four feature races. However, his performance has since waned, leaving him in fifth place, 58 points behind championship leader Leonardo Fornaroli.

Sources indicate that McLaren sought to retain Dunne but ultimately found the terms unacceptable. Amidst emerging interest from Red Bull Racing, the decision was made to cut ties with the 19-year-old driver.

“We have enjoyed working with Alex over the past year and have appreciated his growth through our Driver Development program,” stated a McLaren representative. “Alex will be released with immediate effect, and we wish him success in his future endeavors.”

Currently, McLaren has both Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris under long-term contracts and is poised to secure its second consecutive constructors’ championship this weekend in Singapore.

Dunne’s potential move to Red Bull is being monitored closely as the team continues to evaluate its driver options alongside Max Verstappen and its future lineup for the Racing Bulls program in 2026.
