McLaren Faces Challenges in Canadian Grand Prix
Montreal, Canada – McLaren’s Oscar Piastri remarked that the team was unable to capitalize on their tire wear advantage during the Canadian Grand Prix, finishing outside the podium after a challenging race. Piastri qualified third, behind George Russell and Max Verstappen, but struggled on race day amid grip issues that plagued the team throughout the weekend.
In an initial encounter, Piastri was overtaken on the first lap by Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and faced mounting pressure from teammate Lando Norris, ultimately leading to a collision that compromised both drivers. Piastri noted, "Our pace wasn’t great in the first stint on the medium tires… We probably needed the race to be about 100 laps, not 70, to take advantage of that."
Despite demonstrating improved tire performance deeper into the race, McLaren couldn’t make significant positional gains. Piastri elaborated, "We were quick at points… but didn’t have enough of an advantage to make track overtakes. So, a bit frustrating."
Team Principal Andrea Stella highlighted the unique challenges posed by Circuit Gilles Villeneuve’s layout, saying, "Even if it’s low-speed corners, there’s actually a lot of braking and traction… we’ve seen that the braking and traction wasn’t that easy for our car." The team’s struggles with car balance on this smooth surface contrasted sharply with expected performance metrics.
With upcoming races, including the Austrian Grand Prix, Piastri and the team remain hopeful. "Mercedes was quick here last year… I feel like this is kind of the result they should have achieved last year," he remarked, analyzing the competition’s resurgence after adjustments to car setups.
As McLaren reflects on its performance, complex strategies and ongoing developments will be critical to maintaining competitiveness in the latter half of the season.
