McLaren Prepares for Team Orders at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Amid Title Fight
As the 2023 Formula 1 season reaches its climax, McLaren Racing is poised to implement team orders at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, should the situation call for it. With Lando Norris holding a narrow 12-point lead over Max Verstappen and a 16-point advantage over teammate Oscar Piastri, the championship remains tightly contested among the three drivers.
In a poignant statement, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown emphasized the team’s commitment: “We want to win this drivers’ championship… If we get into the race and it’s becoming pretty clear that one has a chance and the other doesn’t, we’re going to do what we can.”
Brown’s comments underscore the potential scenario where Verstappen could clinch the title if Piastri finishes ahead of Norris, thereby necessitating tactical decisions during the race. He elaborated, “We’re not going to miss out on winning the championship because we’re trying to protect positions that don’t impact the title race.”
Both drivers have expressed their willingness to support each other if team orders are deployed. Norris indicated he would welcome assistance, while Piastri mentioned the need for clarity on the team’s approach. Brown believes their collaborative spirit is crucial: “If one of them can’t win, they want the other to win. They are team players.”
The stakes are high, and the situation in Abu Dhabi will require keen judgment from McLaren as they strive to secure the championship title amidst fierce competition.
