British Grand Prix: McLaren Reaches New Heights Amid Controversy
In a dramatic British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Oscar Piastri’s race was overshadowed by a controversial penalty that ultimately benefited teammate Lando Norris, who claimed victory. Piastri faced a 10-second penalty for erratic braking behind the safety car on lap 21, which forced Max Verstappen to take evasive action.
Piastri’s setback occurred just as he was vying for the lead, significantly impacting his race strategy. The McLaren driver served his penalty during a pit stop on lap 43 for medium tires, allowing Norris to take an unchallenged path to victory, finishing six seconds ahead.
As the race neared its conclusion, Piastri requested team orders to allow him to overtake Norris, asserting via team radio, "I don’t think the penalty before was very fair." Despite knowing the team would likely reject his request, he expressed a desire for a "small glimmer of hope."
Team principal Andrea Stella supported Piastri’s communication, emphasizing the importance of transparent dialogue within the team. "We always tell our drivers not to keep things in the back of your mind,” said Stella. "What Oscar did is exactly what we incentivized our drivers to do."
Stella explained that McLaren believed the drivers would have retained their positions had a safety car been deployed, reiterating that the team’s decision to maintain the status quo was fair for both drivers. "At the point in which we needed to have the transition on the dry tires… we thought he should just retain the natural order," he clarified.
Both drivers remain integral to McLaren’s strategy moving forward, as the team aims to build on this performance in upcoming races.
