F1 Icon Bob Constanduros Celebrates Return of Moët Champagne in Podium Tradition
In a significant revival of tradition, Formula 1’s podium celebrations will once again feature Moët & Chandon champagne following a four-year hiatus. This move coincides with the recent landmark deal between F1 and LVMH, bringing back the iconic effervescent drink that has delighted fans and drivers since the series began.
Bob Constanduros, the voice of the F1 circuit and a veteran circuit speaker since 1985, expressed his enthusiasm: “I’m very pleased to be doing a proper ‘champagne’ again,” he stated. His distinctive call of "Champaaaaaagne" has become a staple of the celebrations, adopted from Spanish football commentary to add flair to the podium festivities.
Constanduros’ tenure in F1 has spanned over 700 Grands Prix, making him a central figure in the sport. Reflecting on his journey, he recalled how he started commenting during an era when personal relationships with drivers were more prevalent. His experiences are a treasure trove of anecdotes, both humorous and poignant. “Donington 1993 was memorable for so many reasons,” he recalled, highlighting an encounter with Princess Diana and the unforgettable race where Ayrton Senna triumphed under challenging wet conditions.
Conversely, Constanduros also carries the weight of the 1994 Imola weekend, where he last spoke to Senna before the tragic events that unfolded. "I will always remember the last words Ayrton said to me," he remarked, underscoring the profound impact of that moment.
As motorsport evolves, so too has Constanduros’ role. He acknowledges the technological advancements in broadcasting yet emphasizes the importance of engaging dying audience. "You have to get excited, raise your voice, and try to transmit that passion to your audience," he explained, recognizing the varied levels of engagement among fans.
Despite his extensive career, Constanduros continues to adapt, recently scaling back his commitments while affirming his ongoing passion for the sport. “I’ll keep on going as long as I can,” he asserted, embodying the enduring spirit of Formula 1.
With his rich history and unique insights, Constanduros remains a pivotal figure in retaining the humanity behind F1’s high-speed spectacle, reminding fans that motorsport is as much about the stories as it is about the speed.
