Mercedes Set to Finalize Driver Line-Up Ahead of 2026 Regulations
Mercedes’ Team Principal Toto Wolff has declared the need to finalize the driver line-up for the 2026 season before the resumption of the Formula 1 calendar after the summer break. Currently, both George Russell and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli remain unsigned for next year.
Wolff emphasized the importance of clarity in driver contracts as new regulations loom. “You need to be respectable towards the stakeholders in all of that process. The organisation, the drivers, everybody. You need to understand the way forward,” he stated. He expressed a desire to resolve driver contracts between the Hungarian Grand Prix in early August and the Dutch Grand Prix four weeks later.
During the recent Austrian Grand Prix, where Russell finished fifth and Antonelli was involved in an early retirement after crashing into Max Verstappen, discussions about potential interest in Verstappen surfaced. Although he acknowledged the Dutchman’s appeal, Wolff remarked on the "very little probability" of signing Verstappen for 2026.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the Mercedes decision-making process as it balances its driver roster with the incoming regulatory changes. Wolff reassured that the team should reach a conclusion “in the next couple of months” and hopes to maintain transparency throughout discussions.
