Mexican Grand Prix to Extend Formula 1 Contract Through 2028

The Mexican Grand Prix is poised for a contract renewal with Formula 1, with Mexico City’s head of government, Clara Brugada, announcing that an agreement will be signed in the coming days. This development marks a significant continuation for the race, originally reintroduced to the F1 calendar after a 21-year absence.

Brugada confirmed during a press conference on April 24 that the renewed contract is expected to extend through the end of 2028, mirroring previous extensions granted to F1. Since 2018, the Grand Prix has been privately funded following the withdrawal of federal support by then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which led to the establishment of a private trust to secure the race’s ongoing presence.

Previous contracts included a five-year term and subsequent three-year renewals, with the latest deal allowing for races through 2025. Notably, the 2020 season saw only two races held due to COVID-19 disruptions.

Despite concerns over the impact of Sergio Perez’s exit from the grid, the race’s future appears stable. Executives from CIE, the event’s promotional body, have indicated that a strategic diversification in ticket sales has fostered a robust fan base independent of local driver participation.

Sergio Perez’s departure from Red Bull Racing, slated for the end of 2024 due to inconsistent performance, has raised speculation about his potential return to the championship, possibly with Cadillac. As he weighs his future, the Mexican Grand Prix seems secure, reaffirming its place on the F1 calendar.
