2025 Monaco Grand Prix: A Record-Breaking Audience Despite Mixed Racing Action
The 2025 Monaco Grand Prix, while criticized for its strategic race dynamics, emerged as a significant viewership milestone for Formula 1 in the United States. The event attracted a total live audience of 2.3 million viewers between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. ET, marking a 15% increase from the previous year’s 2 million.
Peak viewership reached 2.6 million from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. ET, only surpassed in recent years by the Miami Grand Prix events. This season, F1 broadcasts across ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 have averaged 1.3 million viewers per race, reflecting an 18% rise compared to the averages of 1.1 million in 2023 and 2024.
The surge in viewership is attributed to Formula 1’s targeted marketing initiatives, particularly among the key 18–49 demographic, with 917,000 viewers falling into this category. This success underscores the efficacy of Liberty Media’s efforts, which include engaging partnerships and promotional strategies, exemplified by collaborations with brands like LEGO and Disney.
A significant factor in F1’s growing popularity is the Netflix series Drive to Survive, which recently influenced the production of an upcoming F1 movie. Director Joseph Kosinski credits the series for igniting his interest in the sport, highlighting the unique competitive dynamics between teammates.
With the film’s successful promotional screenings during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, it is anticipated to further capitalize on the current surge in F1’s appeal, solidifying the sport’s expanding footprint in the U.S. market.
