Red Bull Racing Announces New Leadership Transition
Milton Keynes, UK — In a significant shake-up within the Red Bull Racing organization, Christian Horner has been ousted after 20 years, with Laurent Mekies stepping into the role of team principal. Following this move, Racing Bulls racing director Alan Permane has been appointed to lead the Anglo-Italian squad, which comprises approximately 700 staff members across Milton Keynes and Faenza.
Permane, 58, brings over three decades of experience in Formula 1, having previously served as sporting director and engineer at Enstone with multiple teams including Benetton, Renault, Lotus, and Alpine. He assumed his new role just two weeks ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, signaling a critical time for the team as it aims to establish itself in the highly competitive midfield.
In an exclusive interview with Motorsport.com, Permane expressed surprise at his new leadership position. "Many reacted with shock and some with pride. It’s amazing that they feel I’m capable of leading this team,” he said, thanking senior Red Bull management, including Oliver Mintzlaff and Helmut Marko, for their trust.
Permane’s primary objective is clear: "The target is to be top of the midfield, and we are certainly in a battle for that," he affirmed. He underscored the solid framework established by Mekies and CEO Peter Bayer, indicating that his approach will focus on continuity rather than drastic changes. “My plan is to keep the team on the same trajectory as it’s been on,” he noted.
Moving forward, Permane will also be touring between Red Bull’s facilities. "It will mean more travel for me," he stated, noting his intention to spend increased time in Faenza to oversee operations there.
The complexity of his new role is not lost on Permane. "As a sporting director, you manage a group of 60 or 70 people; this is of course a much bigger role,” he explained. While a direct replacement for the racing director position has not been appointed, chief race engineer Mattia Spini will take on expanded responsibilities.
Permane’s transition has received support from peers in the paddock, with notable camaraderie highlighted in social media posts, including a celebration with Sauber’s Jonathan Wheatley. Reflecting on his journey, Permane remarked, “We’ve grown up together,” emphasizing the bonds formed over years in the sport.
As he embarks on this new chapter at Red Bull Racing, Permane aims to leverage his extensive technical background and managerial experience to guide the team towards its ambitious goals in the remaining season.
