Rosberg Reflects on Infamous 2016 Spanish Grand Prix Collision with Hamilton
In a revealing discussion ahead of the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix, former F1 champion Nico Rosberg recounted the 2016 incident that irreparably strained his relationship with teammate Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. The clash occurred just four corners into the race, leading to both drivers’ retirements and raising questions about team dynamics and driver conduct.
Rosberg explained, "I took the lead around the outside of Lewis but had the wrong engine setting, which slowed me down approaching Turn Four. Lewis tried to go for the inside, and I blocked aggressively. He went over the grass without lifting, which is unbelievable," underscoring the high-stakes nature of the encounter.
The fallout from the crash left the Mercedes team in turmoil. "It was already bad, so it didn’t change much, just made it worse," Rosberg admitted, noting the complexity of internal politics and the fractured relationship as contributors to that tumultuous season. Team Principal Toto Wolff commented at the time, “We let the drivers race, and sometimes this is what happens.” However, the late Niki Lauda expressed more concern, criticizing the situation as "completely unnecessary."
The contentious incident came at a pivotal moment, with Rosberg ultimately clinching the 2016 drivers’ championship by a mere five points before announcing his retirement. This defining moment in F1 history continues to resonate, illustrating the intense pressures faced by drivers and teams within the sport’s competitive environment.
