Norris Keeps Verstappen in Title Conversation Ahead of Spanish GP
As the 2025 Formula 1 season progresses, Lando Norris of McLaren stated that it would be “silly” to underestimate Max Verstappen’s chances in the world championship race, despite his team’s current form. Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri are locked in a tight battle for the drivers’ championship, with Piastri holding a narrow three-point lead.
McLaren has demonstrated dominance in the constructors’ standings, amassing more than double the points of its nearest rival. However, Norris emphasized that the title fight remains open, stating, “I think mathematically, there’s still probably the whole grid can win the championship at the minute.” This sentiment reflects a recognition of the unpredictable dynamics inherent in racing.
Verstappen, currently third in the standings, trails Piastri by 25 points. While he has secured victories in Japan and Imola this season, Red Bull’s RB21 has been challenging to handle, with disappointing performances in Bahrain and Monaco. Norris remarked, “We’re racing Max every weekend,” acknowledging Verstappen’s consistent podium finishes and competitive spirit.
Despite the ongoing competition, Norris maintains a focused approach. “I’ll just try and win this weekend and I’ll try and win in Montreal, and I’ll try and win in Austria,” he noted, underscoring that the championship standings do not alter his race weekend mentality.
As the teams gear up for the Spanish Grand Prix, the unfolding narrative suggests that both McLaren’s internal rivalry and Verstappen’s resilient pursuit will keep the championship contest lively and unpredictable.
