Norris Secures Pole Amid Challenging Conditions at Las Vegas Grand Prix
Las Vegas, NV – In a tense qualifying session marked by rain-soaked conditions, Lando Norris emerged victorious, claiming pole position for the Las Vegas Grand Prix with a time of 1:47.934. The session faced significant challenges as heavy rain prior to qualifying led to slippery track conditions, peaking at a low temperature of 54°F.
As the rain subsided, the track began to dry, but it remained treacherous. Norris initially posted a time that placed him eighth before steadily improving through the rounds. He achieved his best time on his final lap, although a moment of oversteer through the final chicane kept him from further improvement.
“Boy, that was stressful — stressful as hell,” Norris remarked. “It’s slippery out there… more rewarding on a day like this because it was a tricky one.”
Max Verstappen qualified second, 0.323 seconds behind Norris, and acknowledged the difficult conditions, stating, “It’s already slippery in the dry, but in the wet, it’s not fun. I struggled a lot just to have any kind of grip.”
Carlos Sainz secured third, although his performance may be overshadowed by a potential grid penalty for an unsafe re-entry during Q1. He noted, “I’m happy with P3… we did a few changes in the car that helped in the wet.”
George Russell rounded out the top four with a lap that was 0.869 seconds off the pace. Title contender Oscar Piastri, who qualified fifth, faced a frustrating session after being impeded by yellow flags and traffic.
Liam Lawson, Fernando Alonso, and Isack Hadjar followed Piastri in sixth, seventh, and eighth places, respectively. Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly completed the top ten.
Notable absences from Q3 included Nico Hülkenberg and Lance Stroll, who failed to capitalize on their final opportunities. Stroll’s decision to switch to intermediate tires did not pay off, ultimately placing him 12th.
Alex Albon’s promising session ended prematurely when he crashed at the last chicane, finishing 16th. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected elimination from qualifying left him at the bottom of the grid as he misjudged the remaining time for a final attempt.
As race day approaches, all eyes will be on Norris and the strategies each driver will employ in such unpredictable weather.
