Mexico City Grand Prix Report

Lando Norris Clinches Victory and Takes Championship Lead

Lando Norris executed a masterful drive at the Mexico City Grand Prix, seizing first place and the championship lead from teammate Oscar Piastri. The race marked Norris’s emergence as the new title contender after 15 rounds.

Starting from pole position, Norris launched flawlessly as the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz battled with Max Verstappen into Turn 1. Leclerc briefly claimed the lead but quickly returned it to Norris after exiting Turn 3. Verstappen’s aggression resulted in a collision with Lewis Hamilton, who faced a 10-second penalty for failing to adhere to race director instructions, dropping him from the podium.

Verstappen lost additional ground to Oliver Bearman in the ensuing chaos. The Haas driver capitalized on the early incidents to ultimately finish fourth, marking his career-best result.

By Lap 15, Norris had established a commanding 5-second lead, which he extended to 17 seconds before completing a single pit stop on Lap 34. He crossed the finish line with a remarkable 30-second advantage over the competition, securing his first victory post-midseason break.

What a race! I could just keep my eyes forward and focus on what I was doing. A pretty straightforward race for me, which was just what I wanted.” Norris remarked after the race.

Leclerc maintained second place despite a late surge from Verstappen, who had pitted later than other frontrunners. A late virtual safety car neutralized the battle, preserving Leclerc’s podium position.

I was quite happy about the safety car in the end. My tires were completely gone; it was tough, but I think the safety car saved me.” Leclerc stated.

Verstappen, now 36 points behind Norris, expressed relief at managing to secure third place after a challenging start, noting, “A difficult weekend for us, but to be fighting for P2 with everything that happened in the first laps, I think it’s still a very strong result.

Oscar Piastri faced setbacks but managed to recover to finish fifth. Starting from seventh, he dropped to ninth at the start but executed a compelling strategy to close the gap, narrowly missing a chance for a podium.

Hamilton, constrained by his penalty, finished eighth, while Esteban Ocon and Gabriel Bortoleto rounded out the points finishers. Bortoleto’s performance stood out as he gained six positions from his grid spot.

The race saw retirements from Sainz, Fernando Alonso, Nico Hülkenberg, and Liam Lawson, highlighting the challenges of the Mexican circuit.
