Piastri’s Frustrating Encounter with Alpine at the Austrian Grand Prix

Austrian Grand Prix, 2025 – Oscar Piastri experienced a challenging outing at the Austrian Grand Prix, where he competed fiercely against his McLaren teammate Lando Norris for the lead. However, traffic proved detrimental, leading to a controversial moment involving Alpine’s drivers.

On lap 55, Piastri, while attempting to navigate past Franco Colapinto, was forced off the track, resulting in a five-second penalty for the rookie. This was compounded just two laps later when championship leader Piastri encountered Pierre Gasly’s blockade, further complicating his efforts to close the gap to Norris.

Over the team radio, Piastri expressed his frustration with Alpine, stating, “Alpine still manages to find a way to fuck me over all these years later.” This comment, although not broadcast live, was recorded on his onboard audio.

Piastri’s move to McLaren in 2022 has proven advantageous; he currently leads the championship standings. However, Norris’s victory at the Red Bull Ring has narrowed Piastri’s margin to a mere 15 points.

The race featured a clean battle between Piastri and Norris, though Piastri admitted to a near-miss incident at Turn 4 while vying for the lead. "It was intense… a good battle," he remarked post-race, acknowledging the fine line they treaded while competing.

Team principal Andrea Stella commended Piastri for his immediate accountability following the Turn 4 incident, stating, “As soon as he crossed the finish line, he opened the radio and acknowledged his mistake," indicating a maturation in the driver’s approach.

The events at the Austrian Grand Prix underscore Piastri’s ongoing growth and resilience in the competitive landscape of Formula 1, despite lingering tensions from his past with Alpine.
