McLaren Struggles for Performance in Canadian Grand Prix

Montreal, Canada – McLaren’s Oscar Piastri expressed disappointment following the Canadian Grand Prix, where the team struggled to capitalize on a potential tire wear advantage due to a lack of race laps. Piastri qualified third, flanked by George Russell and Max Verstappen, while teammate Lando Norris started seventh after qualifying errors.

In the race, Piastri faced immediate pressure on lap one, losing a position to Mercedes’ rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Despite the long-standing expectation that McLaren would excel on the Montreal circuit, characterized by rear tire stress, the Australian driver struggled to make progress.

“Our pace wasn’t great in the first stint on the medium tires," Piastri noted. "We only found our rhythm deeper into the race when others began to degrade." He added, "Unfortunately, we probably needed the race to be about 100 laps, not 70, to take advantage of that."

Team principal Andrea Stella analyzed the weekend, stating that while the team made progress in the build-up, they could not overcome inherent issues that the track’s layout exposed. “This circuit has a lot of braking and traction,” he explained. “In both conditions, we have to say that the car struggled a bit to start with.”

Stella acknowledged improvements made since Free Practice 1, leading to a strong qualifying position. However, the combination of the circuit’s characteristics—primarily low-speed corners with significant braking demands—did not favor the MCL39’s strengths.

Piastri remains optimistic but cautions, "I think as a team we recognized it was a challenging one, and we need to be stronger." He emphasized the need for ongoing development as Mercedes appears to regain competitive form.

Looking ahead to the Austrian Grand Prix, Piastri and McLaren will aim to address their performance discrepancies, testing their capabilities on a circuit resembling Montreal’s characteristics with additional high-speed sections.

The Canadian GP concluded with Russell taking the lead, confirming Mercedes’ resurgence in form after their previous season’s struggles. The upcoming race provides an opportunity for McLaren to reassess and respond to the challenges faced in Montreal.
