Piastri Apologizes After Close Call with Norris in Austrian GP

In a dramatic clash at the Austrian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri narrowly avoided colliding with teammate Lando Norris while battling for position. Following the race, Piastri expressed his regret over the incident, which occurred when he attempted an overtaking maneuver at Turn 4 and locked up, nearly hitting Norris’s car.

Team principal Andrea Stella praised the overall conduct of both drivers, stating, “I am very proud of how our two drivers raced today. We want our drivers to express their talent while adhering to established principles.” He acknowledged the single instance of concern, emphasizing the team’s commitment to fostering competitive spirit while maintaining safety protocols.

Stella further commended Piastri for taking immediate responsibility. “He crossed the finish line and said, ‘Sorry for the situation in corner four. My bad. I know what I have to do,’” underscoring the importance of accountability within the team.

Piastri reflected on the race, admitting, “It was a tough battle… probably pushing the limits a bit much from my side.” He noted that the intensity of the first 20 laps highlighted the competitive nature of Formula 1, although he recognized that allowing Norris some space post-pit stop may not have been the optimal strategy.

The Australian rookie concluded that the feedback from the team was appropriate, understanding that such close encounters are part of high-stakes racing. Both drivers emerge from the race with valuable insights as McLaren aims for continued improvement in the championship standings.
