Piastri’s Struggles with Alpine Resurface at Austrian GP
During the Austrian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri faced renewed challenges linked to his former team Alpine, experiencing notable on-track frustrations. Piastri, currently racing for McLaren, was impeded by Alpine drivers Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly, leading to a tense moment on lap 55 when he was forced off the track by Colapinto, who received a five-second penalty for the incident.
Two laps later, Gasly obstructed Piastri as he sought to close the gap to teammate Lando Norris, who eventually won the race, narrowing Piastri’s championship lead to 15 points. Frustration voiced over team radio captured Piastri’s sentiment: “Alpine still manages to find a way to fuck me over all these years later.”
Piastri left Alpine in 2022 under contentious circumstances, publicly declaring, “This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023.” The decision proved beneficial, as he currently leads the championship standings.
Reflecting on the race, Piastri acknowledged a lock-up at Turn 4 while contending with Norris, where he recognized the intensity of their race was "on the edge at times." Team Principal Andrea Stella commended Piastri for taking immediate responsibility after the race, highlighting his commitment to improving: “He said, ‘Sorry for the situation in corner four. My bad. I know what I have to do.’”
This race encapsulated Piastri’s ongoing development in F1, demonstrating resilience amidst lingering ties to his past team.
