Piastri Addresses Controversial Radio Message After Austrian GP
Spielberg, Austria — McLaren driver Oscar Piastri clarified his post-race radio message at the Austrian Grand Prix, where he expressed frustration towards Alpine, stating, "Alpine still managed to find a way to f*** me over all these years later." This remark echoed his contentious exit from the French team in 2022, following Fernando Alonso’s departure.
Piastri’s turbulent transition began when Alpine prematurely announced he would replace Alonso, a claim he immediately disputed via social media, stating he had not signed a contract with the team for the following season.
Reflecting on the radio message during a press conference, Piastri explained, "It was just a coincidence that qualifying was obviously an Alpine [spinning] and then I got impeded by both in the race to an extent." He dismissed speculation regarding his career trajectory, emphasizing that he hasn’t considered how different factors would have influenced his current standing in Formula 1.
During the Austrian GP, Piastri faced further on-track challenges, notably being pushed off by Franco Colapinto and impeded by Pierre Gasly during a critical phase of the race. Despite these tribulations, McLaren’s performance resurgence has positioned Piastri at the helm of the drivers’ standings, leading his teammate Lando Norris by 15 points.
As McLaren looks to maintain its competitive edge, Piastri’s growth within the team and his ability to adapt will be pivotal in the upcoming races.
