McLaren Drivers Clash in Canadian Grand Prix: Piastri Praises Norris for Apology

Montreal, Canada — A late-race collision between McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris overshadowed the Canadian Grand Prix, where George Russell claimed victory under a safety car. Piastri, who maintained his lead in the championship, appreciated Norris’s immediate apology and accountability, suggesting such open communication is vital for team dynamics.

Throughout the race, Norris attempted multiple overtakes on Piastri as they battled for fourth position. The incident occurred on lap 67 when Norris briefly overtook Piastri at Turn 10 but could not secure the position, leading to contact as they navigated the final chicane. Piastri reported feeling a touch but stated he hadn’t seen the incident.

“I still need to have a look. Lando’s apologised to me, so I guess that says a little bit,” Piastri noted. He emphasized the importance of honest conversations within the team, pointing out Norris’s commendable character.

Despite the clash, Piastri expressed hope that McLaren would retain its approach to allow both drivers to race freely, aiming for mutual competitiveness in their quest for the 2025 title. “It was an unfortunate incident really on the straight. I don’t think it will change anything,” he said.

Piastri ultimately finished fourth, a disappointing result for the team, which had not previously missed a podium this season. He now leads the championship by 22 points, with Norris in second place despite retiring from the race late.

Reflecting on the race, Piastri stated, “This weekend wasn’t strong enough from myself. We need to be stronger.” The McLaren team will look to regroup as they prepare for the upcoming rounds of the championship.
