Piastri Struggles for Confidence at USGP Amid Verstappen’s Dominance
Austin, TX – Oscar Piastri expressed discomfort and a lack of confidence in his McLaren following a challenging qualifying session at the United States Grand Prix. Piastri secured sixth, while Max Verstappen extended his championship lead, now reduced to 55 points after winning the Sprint race from pole position.
The McLaren team faced a setback in the Sprint, where both drivers collided at Turn 1, leading to their retirements. Verstappen subsequently dominated qualifying, outpacing Lando Norris by over a quarter of a second to secure pole.
Piastri noted his struggles during the qualifying session: “Just a tricky session. I didn’t really feel terribly comfortable out there… Still a long race tomorrow; a lot can happen, so I’ll try to make up some ground.” He highlighted the unpredictability of the car, observing, “Compared to yesterday, it didn’t feel quite as comfortable or as quick.”
Despite the technical setbacks and the first-corner incident that initiated his Sprint troubles, Piastri clarified that the car was properly repaired for qualifying. “It was back in one piece… It all felt normal, just the kind of behavior that we’ve had a couple of times through the season,” he stated.
Reflecting on the collision, Piastri regarded it as a racing incident, emphasizing his right to compete for track position. “I think for me, it’s a racing incident… Could I have done something a bit different? Maybe, yes, but that different thing would have been to potentially let two or three cars go by.”
As the race approaches, Piastri remains focused on overcoming these challenges and reclaiming his competitive edge. The upcoming race presents an opportunity for McLaren to regain momentum in the face of Verstappen’s impressive performance.
