Formula 1 Confirms Return to Portimao for 2027 and 2028 Seasons
Formula 1 has officially announced that the Portuguese Grand Prix will return to the calendar in 2027 and 2028, with the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimao set to host the event. This decision reaffirms F1’s commitment to diversifying its race venues following the inclusion of Portimao during the 2020 and 2021 seasons amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Portimao circuit previously saw two successful races in October 2020 and May 2021, marking Portugal’s first Grand Prix since 1996 when it was held at Estoril. The addition of Portimao will replace the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, which will conclude after the upcoming season.
F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed enthusiasm for the venue’s return, stating, “I’m delighted to see Portimao return to the Formula 1 calendar and for the sport to continue to ignite the passion of our incredible Portuguese fanbase.” He emphasized the circuit’s entertainment value and the high level of interest in hosting F1 races.
Jaime Costa, chairman of the circuit, highlighted the essential role of government support in facilitating the return, noting, “This achievement was only made possible with the continuous support of the Portuguese Government.” He emphasized the unique challenge the track presents to drivers and its potential benefits for local tourism and community engagement.
The announcement comes as F1 prepares for an exciting 2026 season, which will include two races in Spain—Barcelona and a new event in Madrid. Further expansions may also be on the horizon, with developments in potential races in Thailand and Argentina under consideration.
