Racing Bulls Gear Up for Emilia-Romagna GP with Key Upgrades

The Racing Bulls Formula 1 team is set to debut significant upgrades at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix this weekend, although expectations for dramatic performance improvements remain tempered. The team has finalized a new floor and revised bodywork, marking their first substantial upgrade of the 2025 season.

Team Principal Laurent Mekies stated, "It’s probably fair to say that it’s the first upgrade of the car," during a recent interview. The upgrades have been meticulously refined, with lessons learned from a problematic experience in Barcelona last year when substantial changes resulted in a decline in performance.

Technical Insights

The new floor and bodywork constitute the car’s most impactful aerodynamic elements, essential for improving overall performance. However, Mekies was candid about the limitations of this update: "If you judge an update by the volume of the parts, it’s a lot of data, but the reality is a small step."

As Racing Bulls navigates the tightly contested midfield, every fraction of a second counts. Their performance has fluctuated, with seven points scored across the China and Japan Grands Prix, yet only one additional point earned in Saudi Arabia, placing them eighth in the standings.

Mekies emphasized the importance of a careful approach to car development, stating, "Going step by step is the only way you are going to have some sort of confidence that you are not breaking everything." He noted that a mere tenth of a second could shift a car’s qualifying position significantly within the competitive midfield.

Future Considerations

Looking ahead, Mekies has identified the upcoming Spanish GP as a critical juncture for determining the viability of pushing for further upgrades versus shifting focus toward the 2026 season. He highlighted the implications of recent regulatory changes on flexing front wings, which could influence performance across the grid.

"After Barcelona, we will regroup and assess where our performance is," Mekies clarified, pointing towards a strategic reassessment of the current car’s potential against the backdrop of future developments.

As the Racing Bulls prepare for Imola, the impact of these incremental upgrades remains to be seen, but the team is poised for ongoing developments in a fiercely competitive landscape.
