Red Bull Racing Focuses on Future Amid Verstappen Speculation
Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has addressed ongoing speculation regarding Max Verstappen’s future, confirming the team’s desire to retain the Dutch driver through at least 2026.
Verstappen’s contract status has resurfaced in light of potential interest from Mercedes, particularly with George Russell’s contract expiring at the end of the season. Although Horner indicated confidence in Verstappen’s current contract, he acknowledged that the team must prepare for a future without him.
“Max is a key part of our team and has been for pretty much 10 years now,” Horner stated. “The intention is to keep that going. But one day, there will be a day that there is no more Max.” He emphasized the importance of nurturing emerging talent, referencing the recent opportunity given to young driver Arvid Lindblad.
Comparisons were drawn to the departure of Sebastian Vettel in 2014, which occurred after significant regulatory changes in the sport. “Things go in cycles, and we want to build towards the next cycle," Horner noted. "We understand the pressure that there is next year, with us coming in as a new power unit manufacturer.”
Horner expressed optimism about Red Bull’s competitive landscape despite the challenges ahead, asserting that having engineering teams working closely together will enhance performance. “That shouldn’t be underestimated when you’re talking about the packaging.”
While Horner downplays concerns about Verstappen leaving this season, he did confirm that performance-related clauses exist in the driver’s contract. "Of course that exists in Max’s contract," he said, affirming that the team’s objective is for Verstappen to remain with Red Bull.
In response to inquiries about a contingency plan should Verstappen depart, Horner lightheartedly suggested, "Oscar Piastri!" He reiterated the team’s focus on their current drivers and the necessity for performance improvements.
“Max has a contract until 2028. He’s made it quite clear he would like to finish his career in a Red Bull car,” Horner added, underlining the team’s commitment to Verstappen’s long-term presence.
As the motorsport landscape evolves, Red Bull is poised to navigate the challenges ahead while striving to maintain their position as a championship contender.
