Imola Grand Prix: Red Bull Struggles Against McLaren’s Dominance

Max Verstappen faced a challenging day during practice for the Imola Grand Prix, finishing fifth in FP2, 0.442 seconds off the pace set by McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Red Bull’s team advisor, Helmut Marko, indicated that the team is still lacking approximately four-tenths of a second compared to their rivals.

Verstappen’s day was marked by difficulties in long-run practice, where he noted, “In the long runs, I got overtaken by the McLaren, which says enough. They pull away.” This sentiment was echoed by Marko, who characterized the team’s progress since the Miami weekend as insufficient. "We have made some progress with our updates, but we haven’t come much closer. The fact remains that McLaren is absolutely superior,” Marko stated.

Despite Red Bull introducing several updates, including a reworked engine cover and rear suspension, Verstappen remained skeptical about his chances for pole position, admitting, “At the moment, not very high,” attributing it to a lack of corner balance.

Marko acknowledged that compared to Miami, where Red Bull lagged by seven-tenths to a second, the gap has been reduced to four-tenths in Imola. "That would mean we’ve made a step forward, but McLaren still holds a significant advantage at this track," he added.

As the teams prepare for qualifying, Red Bull is hopeful for improved tire degradation, which could influence their performance during the race. Yuki Tsunoda’s potential to match Verstappen’s pace, being within a tenth, offers a glimmer of optimism for the team as they navigate ongoing challenges.

Key Takeaway: While Red Bull has made some advancements, McLaren remains the team to beat as Imola approaches. The focus now shifts to qualifying and race strategy.
