Red Bull Introduces New Sidepod Package in Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Effort
Imola, Italy — As the 2023 Formula 1 season progresses, Red Bull Racing has launched a new sidepod package aimed at closing the gap to championship leader McLaren. Debuting this upgrade during the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, the revised RB21 features a new floor configuration paired with a reshaped sidepod design, transitioning towards an inlet arrangement more aligned with McLaren’s approach.
The updated sidepod design features a noticeable detachment of the leading edge, allowing the inlet to integrate with the chassis more effectively. This change aims to enhance aerodynamic efficiency by optimizing airflow dynamics around the modified componentry. Red Bull spokespersons noted, "This re-optimization of the inlet and surrounding geometry is expected to achieve greater aerodynamic efficiency."
Additional modifications include a revised fairing for the rear suspension, adjusted wheel bodywork, and duct configurations to further augment aerodynamic performance.

McLaren has subsequently released its own updates, emphasizing improved aerodynamic flow around the rear of their vehicle. The team has equipped the car with a higher-downforce rear wing designed to maximize load in lower-speed conditions, complemented by a high-downforce beam wing.
Ferrari is also adapting, with modifications to its rear wing and brake scoop geometry intended to enhance performance. Team representatives indicated that while the geometric changes are minor, they anticipate positive effects on lap times.
Mercedes has shifted its focus to the front-end dynamics of its vehicle, implementing a new front wing and modifications to suspension fairings to refine airflow towards the rear wing.
In the midfield, Aston Martin, Haas, Alpine, and Racing Bulls have introduced various parts to boost performance. Aston Martin’s AMR25 features seven upgrades aimed at increasing downforce, thanks to adjustments in the car’s floor and diffuser. Haas has reinforced its floor to enhance consistency across different ride heights, emphasizing a new floor shape that improves airflow to the rear.
Alpine’s A525 saw updates including a new front wing and altered rear bodywork, while Racing Bulls has focused on enhancing local downforce through its latest bodywork modifications.
As the competitive landscape intensifies, teams are betting heavily on these developments as they prepare for the upcoming races.
