Red Bull Racing Seeks Superlicence Exemption for Arvid Lindblad

Red Bull Racing is pursuing a superlicence exemption for Formula 2 driver Arvid Lindblad, amid scrutiny surrounding Max Verstappen’s recent accumulation of eleven penalty points. The request, submitted prior to Verstappen’s penalties, will be reviewed during the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Macau next week, as confirmed by Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko.

Lindblad, a promising talent currently third in the Formula 2 standings with two wins—including a feature race victory at Barcelona—meets the necessary criteria for a superlicence, having earned adequate superlicence points. However, the FIA mandates that drivers be at least 18 years old to receive this critical document. This rule was instituted following Verstappen’s record-setting F1 debut at 17 without a full driving licence.

The FIA International Sporting Code allows potential exemptions for drivers under 18 who demonstrate exceptional ability and maturity. Last year, Mercedes successfully requested a similar exemption for Andrea Kimi Antonelli, prompting a revision in the Code to accommodate talents with outstanding track records.

In light of Verstappen’s precarious position, where a one-race ban looms due to his penalty points, securing Lindblad’s participation in F1 practice sessions could provide Red Bull with additional options. If approved, Lindblad could step in for one of the regular drivers or boost the team’s strategy alongside reserve driver Ayumu Iwasa.

Lindblad will turn 18 on August 8, just after the Hungarian Grand Prix, making him eligible for the superlicence shortly thereafter, regardless of the outcome of next week’s meeting. This development signals Red Bull’s proactive approach to manage their driver lineup amid ongoing competitive pressures.
