Mercedes Team Principal Confirms George Russell’s Strong Contract Position Amid Talks

As the Formula 1 season progresses, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has affirmed that George Russell is in a favorable position regarding his contract extension discussions. Russell’s current deal concludes at the end of this season, and uncertainty surrounding his future has been heightened by Mercedes’ interest in Max Verstappen, who recently secured a contract with Red Bull through 2026.

Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Russell commented on the past six months, saying they have "not been the most assuring." Despite these challenges, Wolff remains confident in Russell’s capabilities and contributions since he joined the team in 2018.

“George has always had good cards because he delivered since 2018,” Wolff stated. He emphasized that Russell’s strong performances reinforce the team’s intent to retain him. “Just because you don’t talk outside doesn’t mean that things aren’t progressing internally,” he added, indicating that contract negotiations are advancing positively.

Wolff, however, did not set a timeline for any announcements regarding Russell or teammate Kimi Antonelli, who also awaits confirmation on his future. "We’ll choose a good moment, like some kind of funky Grand Prix where there are lots of fans," he remarked when asked about the timing of potential announcements.

In Hungary, Antonelli scored his first point of the European season, finishing 10th. Wolff noted that reverting to an older suspension setup has bolstered the rookie’s confidence, stating, “The car generally is giving more feedback to him.” Despite a challenging qualifying session, Wolff expressed satisfaction with Antonelli’s race performance, highlighting his ability to defend against competition and contributing to the team’s development as they aim for a stronger second half of the year.
