George Russell Addresses Mercedes’ Weather-Dependent Performance Ahead of British GP

Silverstone, UK – George Russell expressed concerns regarding Mercedes’ reliance on weather conditions as the team prepares for the British Grand Prix. After practice sessions, Russell noted that Mercedes had struggled in the high track temperatures of 40°C, which have previously impeded their performance compared to rivals, particularly Ferrari.

Historically, Mercedes has found its footing during cooler conditions, a trend that may continue with the forecast of overcast skies for the weekend. Russell highlighted the team’s need to improve performance consistency regardless of weather variations. “It’s frustrating for us that every single week we are at the mercy of the weather,” he stated after Friday’s sessions.

Despite a recent victory in Canada, Russell stressed the challenge ahead, emphasizing that Ferrari has made notable gains coinciding with rising temperatures. He acknowledged, “They’ve taken a step forward purely because of the temperature” and recognized their strong race pace throughout the season, despite difficulties in qualifying.

Russell’s preferences for the race day include mild, dry conditions to avoid rear-axle overheating—a recurring issue exacerbated by warmer temperatures. “If it’s wet in qualifying, I’m excited for that, but a wet race probably wouldn’t be ideal," he added, pointing to the inherent degradation issues with wet-weather tires.

As the grid heads into the British GP, the focus remains on whether Mercedes can leverage anticipated cooler weather to regain competitiveness against an improving Ferrari lineup.
