George Russell Confirms Ongoing Discussions at Mercedes Amid Contract Uncertainty
Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, George Russell has indicated that negotiations involving himself and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen are active, although he has not finalized his contract with Mercedes for the 2026 season. In a recent interview with Sky Sports F1, Russell stated, "Yeah, a little bit. No major updates yet," concerning the status of his contract discussions.
Russell’s current contract, along with that of teammate Kimi Antonelli, expires at the end of the season. Despite this uncertain future, he expressed confidence in his performance, mentioning, "I feel with the performance I’m showing at the moment… I’ve got zero reasons to be worried." This season has seen Russell secure his first career win at the Canadian Grand Prix, alongside five podium finishes, placing him fourth in the driver standings—19 points behind Verstappen.
Mercedes currently sits second in the constructors’ championship, contending fiercely for that position. “As Mercedes, they want to be back on top… it’s only normal that conversations with the likes of Verstappen are ongoing,” Russell commented, recognizing the team’s ambition.
Despite previous on-track clashes with Verstappen, Russell remains focused. He remarked, "I’m fighting for myself, my team… if Max and I have come together a few times… that’s just the way it’s panned out." Team principal Toto Wolff has reaffirmed Russell’s significance to the team, highlighting his performance as among the best on the grid.
However, Russell acknowledged the open nature of the team’s driver lineup, stating, "There are two seats at every team… that’s what the delay is." As discussions unfold, both Russell and Mercedes are eager to solidify their future direction in a competitive landscape.
