Austrian Grand Prix: Carlos Sainz Forces Aborted Start
In a dramatic turn of events before the commencement of the Austrian Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz’s Williams car became immobile, leading to a premature withdrawal from the race. The formation lap commenced, but Sainz reported over team radio, “Something is stopping the car from moving forward,” as his vehicle was stuck in first gear.
After managing to shift into neutral, Sainz advanced toward the pits, but caught fire due to overheating rear brakes. The Williams team promptly confirmed that Sainz would not participate, stating, “Car 55 returns to the garage and he’s out of the car. We’re down to one car.”
Sky Sports F1 analyst and former driver Karun Chandhok noted the emotional impact of such failures, describing it as "a massive balloon that just goes pop," underscoring the disappointment felt by the drivers and their teams.
As the start delay unfolded, conditions were challenging in the cockpit. Fernando Alonso expressed discomfort, reporting that his seat temperature was “200 degrees,” while George Russell of Mercedes highlighted the lack of hydration, urging for ample water for the mechanics.
Sainz’s teammate, Alex Albon, commenced the race from 12th position, leaving Williams with only one representative on the grid as tensions escalated among the remaining drivers.
