Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: Williams Faces Reality Check as Sainz Sees Future Potential

The final race of the Formula 1 season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, served as a stark reminder for Williams regarding the challenges ahead. Carlos Sainz, who delivered a surprising podium finish just a week prior in Qatar, expressed optimism for the team’s future despite finishing 13th at Yas Marina Circuit.

Sainz and teammate Alex Albon delivered lackluster performances, with Albon finishing shortly behind Sainz. Discussing the race, Sainz stated, “We were starting 12th and we were the 12-fastest car. With nothing exciting happening in that race, we were always going to finish there.” He underscored the lack of pace as a key concern, remarking, “There was not enough pace this weekend… I’m actually happy that this happened, so we’re going into a winter without falling asleep.”

Despite the disappointing results at the season’s end, Sainz highlighted the progress made during the latter half of the season. He stated, “I think in the second half I proved to everyone – and myself – why we made this switch, what we are trying to achieve here and why we are a force to be reckoned with for the future.”

Reflecting on the season, he noted, “If you would have told me last year that I would have scored those podiums and a P5 in the constructors’ like we are, I would have taken it. Overall, we have to take it as a very positive first year with Williams.”

As the team prepares for a critical off-season leading into the new technical regulations for 2026, Sainz’s insights indicate a focused commitment to improvement and competitive resurgence.
