Sauber F1 Team Celebrates Vital Fifth Place Finish at Spanish GP
Barcelona, Spain – Sauber F1 team manager Jonathan Wheatley expressed relief following driver Nico Hulkenberg’s impressive fifth-place finish at the Spanish Grand Prix, a significant turnaround for the team after a challenging start to the season.
Despite scoring points in the Australian season opener, Sauber struggled in subsequent races, unable to capitalize on a tightly contested midfield. The team’s fortunes changed dramatically in Barcelona, buoyed by substantial upgrades including a redesigned floor, a new engine cover, and modified front wing endplates.
Hulkenberg showed promising form during qualifying but started from 16th while rookie teammate Gabriel Bortoleto qualified 12th. However, during the race, Hulkenberg made a strong start, quickly ascending to ninth position after the retirement of Andrea Kimi Antonelli. A late restart enabled him to overtake Isack Hadjar and Lewis Hamilton, ultimately earning him a fifth-place finish following a time penalty issued to Max Verstappen.
Wheatley acknowledged the importance of the upgrades, stating, "There’s so much hard work going on… it feels like this huge relief because we know what we’ve been capable of." He emphasized the need for consistent performance improvements, highlighting that "in the fight we’re in, a tenth of a second makes a massive difference."
This result marks Sauber’s best finish since Valtteri Bottas also claimed fifth at Imola in 2022. Wheatley is optimistic that the upgrade will allow Sauber to compete more effectively in the midfield, a crucial factor as the team prepares to transition into Audi’s factory programme in 2026.
Hulkenberg’s performance, particularly his late-race overtaking of Hamilton, drew acclaim, with the driver reflecting, "It was a bit of a pinch yourself moment because that was on pace." As the season progresses, the team’s objective remains clear: to transform recent improvements into regular points-scoring finishes.
