McLaren Strategically Pits Out of Sequence to Optimize Performance at Monza

Monza, Italy – McLaren’s Race Director, Andrea Stella, defended the team’s strategic decision to pit its drivers out of sequence during the recent Italian Grand Prix, aimed at maximizing their chances against Red Bull’s dominant Max Verstappen. While Verstappen led the race from start to finish, McLaren opted to delay pit stops for both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, enabling them to mount a challenge for a potential victory.

Stella explained the rationale behind running long before switching to soft tires in the latter stages of the race. “Stopping to cover Leclerc would have been the simple solution, but it would have limited our result,” he stated. By extending their stints, the team also prepared for any potential red flags or safety car incidents, strategically positioning the two McLarens to capitalize on any late-race circumstances.

Piastri was brought in first, leading to an unusual pit sequence that deviated from standard practices. A slow stop for Norris prompted a team order for position swapping, a decision Stella clarified as a calculated risk. “Even despite the slow pit stop, the powerful undercut with new soft tires could have allowed Lando to recover lost time,” he noted.

Going forward, McLaren plans to analyze the pit stop data to refine their strategies, although Stella cautioned against presuming that changes will be made. “Reviewing does not necessarily mean we have to change. It sets a foundation for pursuing excellence,” he concluded, emphasizing the team’s commitment to continual improvement.

McLaren remains competitive in the midfield, demonstrating tactical acumen in adapting to race dynamics, even as they navigate the challenges posed by the race leader.
