Miami Grand Prix Incident: No Sanction for Russell After Red Bull Protest

During the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, Mercedes driver George Russell faced potential sanctions after Red Bull Racing lodged a protest, claiming he failed to slow adequately under yellow flags. Russell, who finished third, was ahead of Max Verstappen when a virtual safety car was deployed due to Gabriel Bortoleto’s car issues.

Verstappen voiced his concerns via team radio, questioning whether Russell had lifted during the yellow flag period. Despite Red Bull’s intentions to protest, no investigation occurred during the race. Russell’s podium finish was secured with Verstappen just over two seconds behind, having been instructed to maintain a gap of less than five seconds.

Later, stewards confirmed in their decision that telemetry data indicated Russell did reduce throttle in the yellow flag zone, although his speed slightly increased. They cited Article 26.1, which mandates drivers must reduce their speed below regular race conditions when yellow flags are displayed.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff commented on the matter, suggesting uncertainty surrounding the yellow flag incident. “I think there was a situation in terms of yellow flags,” he stated, indicating that the team had no clear awareness of Russell’s actions at that moment.

In conclusion, the incident concluded without penalization, maintaining the results of the Miami Grand Prix, while highlights of the race continued to spark discussions within the paddock.
