Stroll Withdraws from Spanish Grand Prix Due to Injury

Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll will not participate in the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, citing ongoing pain in his right hand and wrist. This decision follows Stroll’s 14th-place qualification on Saturday and is directly linked to injuries sustained during a cycling accident prior to the 2023 season.

According to Aston Martin, Stroll has been experiencing discomfort for the past six weeks, which his medical team attributes to complications from a procedure performed after he broke his hand. "As a result, his medical team have confirmed that he will not race tomorrow and will undergo a procedure to rectify these issues before focusing on his recovery," stated the team.

Stroll initially sustained multiple fractures, including two in his wrists and a broken toe, in a training incident in Malaga just before the Bahrain pre-season test. Despite these injuries, he made a remarkable recovery to compete in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, where he finished sixth, demonstrating considerable resilience.

The team’s current focus will now shift to preparations for the Canadian Grand Prix, with Stroll’s ability to return in time for this home race uncertain. Meanwhile, Aston Martin will field only Fernando Alonso’s car in Barcelona, reducing the starting grid to 19 entrants.

First practice for the Canadian GP at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is scheduled for June 13. Further updates on Stroll’s recovery and potential return will follow in the coming weeks.
