McLaren Partners with SEGA to Bring Sonic the Hedgehog to Formula 1
In a strategic move to enhance its brand visibility, McLaren Racing has announced a multi-year partnership with SEGA, officially designating Sonic the Hedgehog as a key element of their marketing initiatives.
This partnership is substantial for the team, particularly as Sonic will feature prominently in various creative integrations and experiential marketing activities, commencing with a SEGA activation at McLaren’s upcoming event in Trafalgar Square, leading up to the British Grand Prix.
Louise McEwen, Chief Marketing Officer at McLaren, expressed enthusiasm regarding the collaboration: “We’re thrilled to welcome Sonic the Hedgehog to the McLaren Racing family. This partnership brings together two iconic names in speed, and opens our team to a wider, younger global audience.”
Sonic’s history with McLaren extends back to 1993 when Ayrton Senna celebrated victory at the European Grand Prix, which was sponsored by SEGA. Senna’s performance that day, which included overtaking four cars on the first lap, remains a significant highlight in F1 history. The commemorative trophy, featuring Sonic, is currently displayed at McLaren’s Technology Centre.
Marcella Churchill, Vice President of SEGA/ATLUS brand marketing, noted, “Racing is in the DNA of both the Sonic and McLaren brands. By combining Sonic’s iconic appeal with McLaren, we’re creating a partnership that should excite fans everywhere.”
This collaboration underscores both parties’ commitment to high-speed action and innovative marketing, setting the stage for future activations that promise to engage F1 fans globally.
