Sauber to Transform into Audi Works Team: Hulkenberg Eyes Development Role

Nico Hulkenberg has emphasized that the perception of Sauber is set to shift dramatically when it rebrands as Audi for the 2024 Formula 1 season. With a storied history as a midfield contender, Sauber has only risen above eighth in the constructors’ standings once since 2013. The transition to Audi as a fully-fledged manufacturer team is expected to bring heightened scrutiny and expectations.

“The perception will change, for sure,” Hulkenberg commented. “Being Audi, there will be a lot more eyes on us, a lot more expectations. But we need to be realistic,” he added, noting that immediate race victories should not be anticipated. He acknowledged the substantial advantages that established top teams possess in terms of infrastructure and resources.

At 38, Hulkenberg brings considerable experience from stints with Williams, Force India, Renault, Aston Martin, Haas, and previously with Sauber. He intends to leverage this knowledge to accelerate Audi’s development process. “As a driver, you’re supposed to race hard and bring results, but you can contribute in other ways… I hope I can contribute to a faster learning next year,” he stated.

The veteran driver underscored the importance of a multifaceted approach to performance, blending experience with data analysis and continuous adaptation. “It’s just a work in progress… you drive, you change things, you test, and you build the picture and knowledge,” he explained.

Hulkenberg expressed pride in the opportunity to represent a prominent German manufacturer at this stage of his career. “It’s cool. It’s definitely an opportunity that doesn’t come around often,” he remarked on securing a factory seat with Audi after his return to F1 in 2023 with Haas.

As Sauber gears up for its transformation, Hulkenberg’s insights and experience could play a crucial role in shaping Audi’s inaugural season in F1.
