Oscar Piastri’s Tyre Management Skills Shine in 2025 Season
In the ongoing 2025 Formula 1 season, Oscar Piastri has significantly improved his tyre management, a pivotal factor noted by McLaren team principal Andrea Stella. Piastri, now in his third season, has addressed previous criticisms regarding his tyre preservation capabilities, consistently matching and occasionally outpacing his teammate Lando Norris.
Stella emphasized that while the enhanced performance of the McLaren car has contributed, Piastri’s development in understanding tyre dynamics is crucial. "No way that this improvement would come simply from the car," he stated. "The only way to exploit the improvements we have made with the car is when the driver understands how to manage the tyres."
Piastri’s evolution is marked by a better grasp of maintaining pace throughout race stints. His performance in the Miami Grand Prix highlighted this, particularly during the hard-tyre phase where Norris showed improved pace but ultimately couldn’t close the gap due to traffic from Max Verstappen. "Even from Lando’s point of view, we have seen improvements," Stella noted, underscoring the competitiveness within the team.
Stella also acknowledged Norris’s progress, pointing out his stronger performance in the latter stages of the Miami race, which hinted at a potentially interesting dynamic between the two drivers in future races. As the season progresses, both drivers will be critical to McLaren’s pursuit of championship success, with tyre management emerging as a cornerstone of their strategy.
