Dual Chequered Flags: A New Tradition in Formula 1

In the 2025 Formula 1 season, the sight of two chequered flags being waved at the conclusion of races has sparked curiosity among fans and analysts alike. Observed at events such as the Suzuka, Miami, and Spanish Grands Prix, this phenomenon has a distinct purpose.

According to a spokesperson for the FIA, the first flag displayed is the official one, marked with the FIA logo, signaling the race’s conclusion. The second flag, which has gained traction in recent races, is a promotional initiative aimed at enhancing spectator engagement. It is waved from the pit wall, typically by a guest, and has no official regulatory status.

At the recent Spanish Grand Prix, football star Robert Lewandowski was entrusted with this ceremonial role. The FIA representative described the concept as reminiscent of a ceremonial kickoff in other sports, where high-profile guests contribute to the event’s celebratory atmosphere.

The secondary flag features names of fans who purchase space on it through F1 Authentics. Prices vary significantly, with spots ranging from €241.95 for the Hungarian GP to €665.95 for the Las Vegas GP. Buyers receive a framed keepsake, including a photo of the flag being waved and a certificate of authenticity.

This dual-flag display not only adds a unique visual element to race finishes but also offers fans a chance to become part of F1 history—albeit through a non-regulatory channel. As the sport continues to innovate, this practice reflects its dual focus on tradition and modernization.
