Tim Mayer to Challenge for FIA Presidency
Tim Mayer, distinguished motorsport official and former FIA steward, has announced his candidacy for the presidency of the FIA in the upcoming December elections. Sources confirm that Mayer, the son of former McLaren team principal Teddy Mayer, will officially state his intentions at a press conference scheduled for Friday near Silverstone, ahead of the British Grand Prix.
Mayer’s entry into the race pits him against current FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who dismissed him from his steward role in November 2022. Mayer’s previous experience includes key positions in IMSA and the American Le Mans Series along with officiating roles across various FIA championships, including Formula 1.
In the lead-up to this announcement, Carlos Sainz Sr. has opted not to run, citing "present circumstances" and his ongoing commitments to Dakar racing.
Mayer’s candidacy poses challenges as he must assemble a complete team of officials to support his bid and will undergo scrutiny from the FIA’s nominations committee. His tenure with the FIA has been marked by controversies, including his vocal criticisms of decisions made under Ben Sulayem’s leadership, particularly relating to penalties imposed during the Singapore Grand Prix.
As Mayer prepares to launch his campaign, the motorsport community will closely monitor the evolving dynamics of the upcoming FIA presidency election.
