Mayer Challenges FIA Presidency: A New Vision Amid Controversy

Tim Mayer, the former FIA official ousted by Mohammed Ben Sulayem, is poised to contest the FIA presidency later this year. With 34 years of diverse experience in motorsports across IndyCar, Champ Car, and IMSA, Mayer is leveraging his background to present an alternative leadership vision.

Mayer’s departure in November 2022 came via a text message following his representation of the U.S. Grand Prix race organizers. Since then, he has felt a growing urgency from peers regarding the FIA’s direction, citing a “near desperation” for change.

"My run is motivated by a necessity to counteract a centralization of power that undermines member representation,” Mayer stated. He expressed concern over recent modifications to FIA statutes that, in his view, centralize authority excessively in the presidency. Mayer adds, “The integrity and democracy of the FIA are at stake; the recent changes have not facilitated a voice for our member clubs."

Mayer’s campaign critiques both the lack of fulfillment of promises made by Ben Sulayem in 2021 and significant turnover in senior positions, which he claims create a perception of diminished transparency. “The structure should empower member clubs,” he argued, emphasizing that “no one person can manage a worldwide organization.”

To restore this empowerment, Mayer proposes to devolve power back to the World Council members, allowing them to effectively represent their clubs—a crucial element that he believes has been compromised under the current administration.

Mayer’s manifesto places considerable emphasis on nurturing future talent within officiating roles and addressing the FIA’s global mobility responsibilities. He aims to develop a comprehensive strategy that looks beyond immediate regulations, advocating for long-term planning to enhance the sport’s credibility and attractiveness to manufacturers.

“I want to foster a landscape where we can discuss regulations for 2030 and beyond, not just focus on the immediate,” Mayer asserted. He believes that strengthening foundations in governance and integrity will provide the FIA with the reputation necessary to influence global mobility and positively impact millions of lives.

Mayer’s campaign is underpinned by collaboration and inclusivity. “I plan to work with experts to expand our mobility initiatives, understanding the complexities rather than presuming to know better,” he concluded. As he prepares for the electoral contest, his commitment to transparency and team-driven management strategy positions him as a serious contender in redefining the FIA’s future.
