Wolff Advocates for Patience with Vasseur Amid Ferrari Struggles
Mercedes Formula 1 chief Toto Wolff has called for patience regarding Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur, who faces mounting criticism as the Scuderia looks to regain competitive form. Entering his third season at the helm, Vasseur has yet to produce the anticipated progress, with the team only achieving a credible podium challenge at the Monaco Grand Prix this season.
Ferrari remains in the fight for second place in the Constructors’ Championship but has not secured a race victory during the 2025 campaign. Recent rumors about Vasseur’s job security have intensified, following reports from Italian media regarding potential leadership changes at Maranello. These claims have been firmly denied by Ferrari, with strong rebuttals from Vasseur and team drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Wolff emphasized the necessity of stability within team leadership during a recent interview at the Austrian Grand Prix, referencing the long-term evolution seen under previous Ferrari leadership. "In Formula 1, you can’t buy time," he stated. He pointed to Jean Todt’s tenure, which spanned eight years before winning a championship, as a model for the endurance required in such high-pressure roles.
Wolff praised Vasseur’s credentials and expressed his willingness to hire him if needed, underscoring his respect for Vasseur’s straightforward approach and racing management skills. He remarked, “Fred is one of the best racing managers that I know… He knows what he’s talking about.”
Acknowledging the intense scrutiny faced by Ferrari leaders, Wolff suggested that Vasseur must adapt to this demanding environment. "If he wins, he is Jesus Christ. And if you lose, you’re a loser," he noted, highlighting the passionate yet unforgiving nature of Italian motorsport culture.
Wolff concluded by affirming the need for confidence in Vasseur’s leadership, stating, "They won’t get anybody better." As Ferrari navigates its current challenges, the motorsports community will be watching closely to see if Vasseur can leverage the support and time he needs to effect meaningful changes.
