Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying: Tsunoda Struggles as Verstappen Shines

In a tightly contested Q1 for the Spanish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing led the field with Yuki Tsunoda trailing closely, just under six-tenths of a second behind. Despite this narrow gap, Tsunoda faced elimination, finishing at the bottom of the timesheets.

Tsunoda described his performance as perplexing, expressing uncertainty over his lack of pace: “I have no idea why I am slow,” he stated after Friday’s practice. Although he felt his qualifying laps were cleaner, he still struggled for speed, prompting him to request a check on the car’s floor after a hard run over Turn 13, although no damage was found.

“I don’t think it’s the set-up,” Tsunoda commented, highlighting his exhaustive attempts to dial in the car. “We tried almost every set-up… but the lap times don’t match the balance."

Throughout the weekend, Tsunoda reported persistent issues with understeer and sliding, suggesting a “core limitation” within the RB21 that he couldn’t pinpoint. Previously, he noted comparable performances to Verstappen at other races, only to experience significant drop-offs.

Red Bull’s driver advisor, Helmut Marko, conveyed concern over Tsunoda’s performance following qualifying: “The performance is disappointing… to finish last is something we need to question internally.” Tsunoda’s teammate from earlier in the season, Isack Hadjar, echoed this sentiment, insisting, “Yuki is definitely worth more than a P20.”

Despite receiving a new floor component during the last race in Imola, Tsunoda has not been afforded all the updates given to Verstappen, explaining some of the disparity in their performance. The car’s handling was further complicated by Barcelona’s demanding track layout, which has amplified issues like tire degradation.

As teams adjust their setups to protect the rear tires—critical given the high-speed demands of the circuit—Tsunoda’s difficulties may persist if the underlying performance issues remain unaddressed. “We did almost everything [on setup], but I can’t see what change will make a difference,” he lamented.

With the main event approaching, both Tsunoda and Red Bull face pressure to rectify these performance gaps, aiming to leverage any last-minute adjustments to enhance competitiveness.
